There are a variety of activities available at Ha'atafu Beach Resort and here are some to give you a taste of what you can expect.
Sport Fishing
With all major species of tropical pelagics well represented here, Tonga is a haven for sport fishing enthusiasts. Get in the thick of the action at “Duff Reef”, a popular offshore fishing spot just minutes away from the resort, and prepare to battle with all the “usual suspects” ie. yellowfin tuna, wahoo, mahimahi and even a chance to challenge mighty marlins and sailfish.
For spin-casting enthusiasts, the maze of shallow coral reefs, bombies and gutters extending 12 km offshore from the resort are a haven for all tropical inshore sport fish such as GTs, bonefish, barracuda etc.
Our resort has two 25ft fibreglass runabouts that are available for both offshore bluewater and inshore spincasting fishing trips. Please bring fishing gear with an emphasis on heavy tackle, lots of spare lures, a strong back and your sense of adventure! |

Snorkelling
The resort borders the Ha'atafu Beach Marine Reserve, Tongatapu's only marine reserve accessible by road. The lagoon area encompassing the reserve is home to over 130 different species of tropical fish and the varieties of both soft and hard corals are outstanding.
The lagoon averages a depth of 2 - 2.5 metres at high tide and 1 metre at low tide. Snorkelling outside of the lagoon and beyond the reef is possible when the surf is small. The reef opens up to realm of deep caverns, drop-offs and a wider variety of "open ocean" marine life.
Snorkelling inside the lagoon is perfect for beginners and children but only strong swimmers and experienced snorkelers should venture beyond the reef.
There are also some outstanding snorkeling sites on nearby offshore reefs and our resort boats are used to provide our guests access to these pristine and unspoilt locations. While we provide a range of basic snorkelling gear during your stay with us, we suggest that advanced snorkelers should bring their own equipment. |

Whale Watching (July - November)
We are blessed with spectacular views of the annual migration of Humpback whales during Winter and Spring here at Ha’atafu Beach Resort. The deep and warm tropical waters here offer the perfect surface condition for the whales to bask in the sun and frolic with their offspring.
While you are able to watch these whales from the beach resort, you will also be able to swim with them beyond the reef if you are an experienced snorkeler. This is an unforgettable experience that many of our guests have taken home with them.
There are a number of whale watching / whale swimming operators based in Nuku’alofa and if you would like to do a day trip while you are here then we will be happy to make bookings for you. We can also help with arranging transport to and from the wharf if required. |

Sea Kayaks
We offer both single and double sea kayaks for our resort guests to use free of charge.
The lagoon area is perfect for enjoying a leisurely paddle with friends and family. However for the safety of young children, we require that they are supervised at all times.
Strong currents can develop around the reef passes during larger swells and we want to ensure that children are kept safe. If required, we have life jackets available for children too. |
Other activities also include:
- Beach Volleyball
- Table Tennis
- Island Tours
- Cultural evenings arranged
